Kat Nelson is a Penobscot artist whose path has been one of transformation, resilience, and deep listening. She pursued her studies at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she explored multiple creative disciplines before focusing her gifts on the art of silversmithing. Her work in silver flourished until a serious accident called her in a new direction, one that would ultimately bring her closer to her roots and her people.
Guided by that calling, Kat returned home to Maine and found her place on Indian Island, the heart of the Penobscot Nation, where she now resides. Her period of healing became a time of quiet discovery, as she opened herself to new mediums of expression. It was there that the land and community welcomed her back, and where the wisdom of Elder artisans helped shape the next chapter of her creative journey.
Kat learned the sacred tradition of sweetgrass artistry under the guidance of Charlene Francis and received the generous mentorship of Barbara D. Francis relationships that grounded her in the cultural knowledge and ancestral teachings woven into this work.
Having walked through a near-death experience and emerged with renewed purpose, Kat now creates from a place of deep gratitude for life itself. Each day she brings that spirit into her work crafting beaded jewelry, adorning clothing with intricate beadwork, and weaving delicate miniature sweetgrass pieces that carry forward the beauty and living traditions of the Penobscot people.
